When Sunbathers Escaped Danger, Viral Picture Depicts Rescuer Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned coast as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed cracking sounds echoing through the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her residence, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, speaking to a couple who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. It was just him running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting towards something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery During Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and medical teams attending to dozens of victims.

Local Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to emerge from the community, with the beach facility adjacent to the location of the incident serving as a impromptu treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including rushing into the ocean to save people in distress.

Following the attack, statements of appreciation flooded in. One post shared thanks for the responders who showed that “goodness will always triumph over hatred”.

The team of beach patrol published a statement, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive messages and encouragement. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the team stated. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew acted heroically from the instant the incident started right into late that evening.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show dedication every day in keeping our world-famous beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be commended.
