The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
