‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from gurney to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

Whenhe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta played in the UK, an teenage playing for the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens soon after, well, he did it once more. When he returned to Manchester to face United at the sports complex in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “Actually,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the forward admits, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We went to play United and I performed well. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the training ground, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and another flight to Britain, now to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of being here. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in European competition. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the 36 months since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching a final at home by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in a long wait. He’s now the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. The son of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that developed the coach, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the top level but each step you go through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his bow and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I tear my cruciate.

“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Current photos and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day a vacancy arises in your position, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after last year which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
