Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unneeded offerings could be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be sold to the highest bidder by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the intention is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with all funds raised benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

The presents are currently kept in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.

The detailed catalog remains disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was reviewed by officials. The query centered on if a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Context

The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her own political sphere, with winning over foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This unique auction highlights a distinct method to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a political career.
